1sts- Comfortable win against Cornish visitors

Adam Holliday2 Mar - 18:31

Okes returned to winning ways against visitors Truro. Despite never getting out of third gear, the home side were comfortable throughout securing a four try bonus point win against their lowly visitors.

Okes began up the slope but despite having the majority of possession and territory in the early stages it was the visitors who scored first, when they intercepted a loose pass out wide for a converted try and a seven point advantage.

It didn’t take long for the hosts to respond, winger Rob Fishleigh crossing in the clubhouse corner after good hands from his fellow backs. Luke Simmons adding a fine conversion.

It was clear that the Okes had the upper hand, but they never really hit their straps, although they did score 3 more tries to bring up the bonus point before the interval. Firstly Brandon Horn was on hand after Saul Holliday picked up and broke through the centre of a ruck. The centre crossed under the posts to make it 14-7 after Simmons added the successful conversion.

Impressive prop Callum Arnold was next to cross the whitewash, forcing his way over from short range for the Okes third score. The accurate Simmons added the extras. The final score of the first 40 went again to Brandon Horn, the centre bagging his brace. Simmons converted and at 28 -7 with the slope to come Okes were comfortable.

The second half may have promised plenty, but it delivered very little. Despite their supremacy, Okes failed to find any real rhythm and became increasingly frustrated by decisions against them. They did score the first try of the second half however, young replacement winger Ollie Jordan grabbing an intercept and taking it home up the right flank.Simmons again added the extras.

The hosts then made it difficult for themselves as they went down to 13 men shortly after. First replacement flanker Simon Cox saw yellow, then Brad Curtis was harshly adjudged to have committed a high tackle on a falling player and saw red.

The visitors subsequently had their best period and scored a second try. A mere consolation but no more than their efforts deserved.

The home side, now back to 14 had the last word, fly half Luke Simmons taking an inside pass and crossing to the left of the posts , which when converted took the final score to 42 points to 14.

So definitely not a classic but five points nonetheless. Oke now have four games remaining, three league and the cup final. They will need to raise their game for tougher games that lie in wait. Next up is the visit of Winscombe next Saturday kickoff 2:30 pm. See you there.

“Come on you Okes!”
